GENERAL

What is the New Jersey Coastal Communiversity?

The Communiversity, led by Brookdale Community College, is an alliance of eight higher education institutions offering undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificate programs to meet the expanding educational needs of coastal New Jersey residents.  The Communiversity is the first alliance of its kind in New Jersey and one of only a handful of such alliances nationwide.

ADMISSIONS

How does the student get started?

 Communiversity staff are available to meet with students to assist them in getting started and selecting programs.  Please direct the student to call 732-280-7090 to schedule an appointment or via email, info@njcommuniversity.org.  To enroll in any of the Communiversity courses and programs, a student must first be admitted to one of the member institutions offering degrees at the Communiversity.  The institution to which a student is admitted is designated as the student’s “Home Institution”.  Brookdale Community College and Ocean County College have open admissions and articulation agreements to facilitate transfer of Brookdale and Ocean graduates to the baccalaureate programs.

**When the Brookdale student makes the decision to pursue their education through one of the  partner schools, the student should complete a Change of Major Form.  This will facilitate the communication and advising process between the student and Communiversity partner school.**

 

If the student had an associate or bachelor degree, can they still attend the Communiversity?

Yes!  A student with an associate degree can enroll in a bachelor degree program offered by one of the member institutions.  Anyone with an appropriate bachelor degree can enroll in one of the graduate degree programs.

Are there any required tests or examination for admittance?

First-time Brookdale and Ocean students may take up to 3 courses before sitting for the Basic Skills Exam.  If you are interested in one of our Communiversity Bachelor’s or Master Degrees, the following have test requirements: BA Elementary Education/Psychology  requires Basic Skills Passing Scores /or/Praxis I, the MBA requires the GMAT exam, and the Masters in Education Administration requires the Praxis 2 or GRE exam.

What are the admissions requirements?

Since the Communiversity is comprised of eight institutions of higher education, each school will have different admissions requirements. 

·        The BS Business Administration (Accounting), New Jersey City University, prefers an associate’s degree in business administration and 2.2 overall GPA

·        The BS Business Administration (Accounting), New Jersey City University, prefers an associate’s degree in business administration and 2.2 overall GPA

·        The BS Business Administration (Management), New Jersey City University, prefers an associate’s degree in business administration and 2.2 overall GPA

·        The BA Information Systems which is offered by New Jersey Institute of Technology requires a 2.8 overall GPA, associate degree in computer science including Calculus I and English Composition. Students who have completed of at least 30 transferable credits including Calculus I and English Composition will also be considered. 

·        The BS Computer Sciences which is offered by New Jersey Institute of Technology requires a 2.8 overall GPA, associate degree in computer science including Calculus I and English Composition. Students who have completed of at least 30 transferable credits including Calculus I and English Composition will also be considered

·        The BS Information Technology which is offered by New Jersey Institute of Technology requires a 2.8 overall GPA, associate degree in computer science including Calculus I and English Composition. Students who have completed at least 30 transferable credits including Calculus I and English Composition will also be considered. 

·        The BS Computer Sciences which is offered by New Jersey Institute of Technology requires a 2.8 overall GPA, associate degree in computer science including Calculus I and English Composition. Students who have completed at least 30 transferable credits including Calculus I and English Composition will also be considered. 

·        The BA Labor Studies and Employment Relations which is offered by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey requires completion of an AA/AS degree.  Admission to Rutgers University programs is competitive.  The credentials of all applicants are evaluated on an individual basis to determine eligibility for admission to Rutgers University

·        The BA Liberal Studies which is offered by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey requires completion of an AA/AS degree. Admission to Rutgers University programs is competitive.  The credentials of all applicants are evaluated on an individual basis to determine eligibility for admission to Rutgers University

·        The BA Elementary or Subject Specific (Secondary) Education with Special Education Endorsement which is offered by Georgian Court University requires at least 60 transferable credits with a 2.75 minimum overall GPA and passing scores on either the Basic Skills exam or the Praxis I exam.

·        The BA Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education offered by New Jersey City University requires a 2.75 minimum overall GPA.

·        BS- Nursing which is offered by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey requires completion of an Associate’s or diploma in Nursing and a current New Jersey RN license.  Admission to Rutgers University programs is competitive.  The credentials of all applicants are evaluated on an individual basis to determine eligibility for admission to Rutgers University

·        BS Criminal Justice, which is offered by New Jersey City University, requires an associate’s degree (AA or AS) from a NJ institution of higher education, preferably in Criminal Justice, with a 2.0 overall GPA and completion of Intro to Criminal Justice and Criminology.

·        BS Criminal Justice-Fire Science Program, which is offered by New Jersey City University, requires an associate’s degree (AA or AS) from a NJ institution of higher education, preferably in Fire Science or Criminal Justice, with a 2.0 overall GPA

·        MBA, offered by Montclair State University, requires completion of a Bachelor’s degree and the GMAT exam. 

·        NJIT Graduate degrees require completion of a Bachelor’s degree with a 2.8 overall GPA, including Calculus I.

·        NJIT Graduate certificates require completion of a Bachelor’s degree, there is no minimum GPA.

·        MA in Education Administration, offered by Georgian Court University, requires completion of a Bachelor’s degree, a current NJ teaching certificate, and completion of the NTE or Praxis II exam within the past 5 years.

·        Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in School Nursing, offered by Rutgers the State University of New Jersey, requires a BS in Nursing, 3.0 overall GPA and a current RN license.

·        MS Nursing, offered by Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, requires completion of a BS in Nursing, 3.0 overall GPA, current RN license, and one of the following: 5 years of relevant practice experience, competitive GRE scores, or a grade of B or better in at least 3 Rutgers Nursing Graduate courses taken as a non-degree student. Pre-requisite courses: Statistics and Basic Physical Assessment.

·        MS in Accounting, offered by New Jersey City University online, requires Completion of an NJCU graduate admissions application, A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a Business related field is preferred, Official transcripts from each institution attended, Recent GMAT scores, Two letters of recommendation, Essay discussing your academic objective, including your reason for pursuing a graduate program  and resume.

·         Master of Arts In Education with Teacher Certification,  to teach K-5, K-8 or High School, offered by Georgian Court University, requires a statement of objectives discussing academic and vocational goals, Official transcripts of each undergraduate and graduate institution attended, including prerequisite courses in humanities, social studies, science, mathematics, and psychology, Three letters of recommendation, Passing scores on the Praxis I exams in reading, writing, and mathematics (Information is available online at http://www.ets.org/praxis/prxaboutI.html), Submission of a federal, fingerprint check (Information is available online at https://www.bioapplicant.com/nj/), and Completion of an interview with the School of Education Admissions Coordinator,

·         Masters of Arts in Teaching to teach pre-school through third grade, offered by Montclair State University, requires a 2.75 cumulative gpa, Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts field including 60 liberal arts credits from undergraduate degree program, Official transcripts from each college attended sent to the address above, GRE Results (Montclair’s code: 2520), 2 letters of Recommendation, 3-4 page “Portrait of Teacher” writing sample, and Interview held at the Communiversity campus in Wall

Are credits given for life experience?

The Communiversity member institutions do not offer life experience credit, however you may be able to take a CLEP or Dante’s exam to earn college credit.

Does the student have to apply to another school besides Brookdale?

The student will need to submit an official application to the Communiversity School from which the student wishes to earn your bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Is there a separate Communiversity application?

There is no separate Communiversity application.  There is a question on the Brookdale application where you can express interest in the Communiversity.  Expressing your interest in the Communiversity will allow you to receive information and updates about the Communiversity.  You should also discuss your degree plans with your Brookdale counselor.  Applicants at Ocean County College should let their advisor know of their interest in a Communiversity degree.

Will the student’s transcripts and diploma be the same as those for students attending the main campus of each institution?

Yes, there will not be any indication on the diploma that the courses were taken at the Communiversity.

Where are courses offered?

Brookdale students can take classes at any Brookdale Location.  Ocean Students take classes at the Ocean Campus.  Communiversity classes (except for Rutgers) are offered at the Communiversity, located at the Brookdale Campus at Wall.  Rutgers classes are offered at the Western Monmouth location in Freehold, with some classes available via ITV at Wall.  Currently, students enrolled in the Montclair MBA programs take classes on the Brookdale, Lincroft campus.

Are there any accelerated programs?

The MBA program, offered by Montclair State University is an accelerated graduate program, requiring 27-months to complete.

Are there a minimum amount of credits that need to be completed?

Associate degrees require at least 60 credits, Bachelor’s degrees require 120-134 credits, and Master degrees require 30-54 credits.

When are classes offered - Day or Evening?

The only programs offered completely via distance education are NJIT’s bachelor’s and master degrees.  Brookdale Community College and Ocean County College offer a variety of day and evening courses, in addition to distance education options.  The Communiversity Bachelor’s and Master’s major courses are offered predominantly in the evening, with Rutgers offering some daytime classes, and 100% of NJIT courses offered via distance education. 

 

Are classes are full-time or part-time?

Students may create a full-time schedule through combining required classes at Brookdale Community College or Ocean County College with the major courses offered by a Communiversity partner.  At this time, the full time programs are: Accounting, Business, Criminal Justice, Education, Labor & Employment Relations, Liberal Studies, Management, Marketing, Nursing and the online NJIT degrees.

Can the entire degree be completed at BCC/OCC and Wall?  Will the student ever have to travel to the home campus at all?

A majority, if not all, classes should be able to be completed at the Communiversity in Wall.  In some cases a student may have to go to a main campus to take a particular class or for advisement or specialized research.

In some cases this may be possible.  Students must follow the rules and regulations of their home institution.

TUITION

What will the tuition be?

Each member institution determines the tuition and fee to be charged for its programs.  Seven of the eight members are public higher education institutions.  The one member that is a private college has discounted its tuition for the Communiversity students.

Who pays “In county fees?”

Monmouth County residents pay in-county tuition at Brookdale, Ocean County residents pay in-county tuition at Ocean County College. Proof of permanent address may be requested.
